Remember when the Ghost in the Shell ‘series’ was solely comprised of the manga by Masamune Shirow? Or perhaps, you remember when it got made into the (fantastic) 1995 anime film? Maybe you preferred the Stand Alone Complex series, which added a lot of depth to the Major, and other characters? Well, here we are today, almost 30 years after the first tankōbon volume was released and it’s safe to say that Ghost in the Shell has well and truly become saturated with all manner of sequels, spinoffs and remakes. Not all of these are necessarily bad (I didn’t even think that the 2017 American remake was that bad), but it seems like there’s always something in the works. And now, we have a new, upcoming Netflix series releasing today (or yesterday, depending on where you are)!
In case you’ve been out of the loop, this new series is called Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 (Oh man! These TITLES!) and it’s a 3D, CGI animated show, set in the Stand Alone Complex ‘universe’. It’s being produced by Sola Digital Arts and Production IG, with Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki directing. Writers include Kamiyama and Dai Sato (among a number of others), who worked on the original SAC anime. There will be two seasons, each with 12 episodes.

I’m… mildly interested. I was – am – a big fan of the Ghost in the Shell series, and the original anime film remains one of my favourites. But, I don’t know, I haven’t been a fan of some of the recent series/OVAs/films and I personally don’t love the 3D animation here. I mean, it does not look bad, but if I had a choice between 2D and 3D, I would pick 2D every time.
