Nier ‘Upgrade’ Coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One (Yuuuus!)

A new Nier upgrade (not a remaster, supposedly) is coming out, and in classic Yoko Taro style, it’s full title is so long, that you’ll likely end up just call it “the Nier Remaster” or something like that. ‘Nier Replicant ver. 1.22474487139’. Now that’s a great and easy to remember title! Naturally, it’s not about the title though, it’s about the game… and what a game the original Nier was/is! While most would probably agree (myself included) that the gameplay in Nier: Automata was vastly superior, the original game still had its moments… and man, what an experience! Like many Taro titles pre-Automata, including Drakengard, it can be rather clunky and a bit of a slog at times, but overall it’s something worth playing, that will leave you with much more than most other, more technically impressive titles.

Now, one thing that should quickly be clarified – this is a remaster-upgrade-whatever of the Japanese version of Nier (‘Nier Replicant’), which differs from Nier (Japanese title ‘Nier Gestalt’) in a number of ways (confused yet?). Gestalt was released exclusively on the Xbox 360 in Japan (but was retitled simply as ‘Nier’ and released on both PS3 and Xbox in the west), whereas Replicant was released exclusively on the PS3, only in Japan. Both versions of the game are basically the same, except for the time they’re set in and Nier’s appearance/role. In Gestalt, it is 2049, Nier is the father of the girl Yoonah. In Replicant it is instead 2053 and Nier is now Yoonah’s brother. Crazy stuff huh?

While I have never played Replicant, I hear that a lot of fans seem to prefer that version, so it’ll be interesting to finally give it a go myself!
